Robert A. “Al” Mundy

Al Mundy Photo0001Robert Allen “Al” Mundy of Moscow died Thursday morning, December 28th at Gritman Medical Center. He was 81.

Al was born July 11, 1936 in Rolla, North Dakota to R. Dewey and Effie Nyberg Mundy. He grew up and attended school in St. John, ND. In 1954 he moved to Chinook, Montana where he began an apprenticeship with Great Northern Railroad as a machinist. It was there he met Dayle LaRayne Hobbs and they were married in Chinook on May 20, 1956. They owned and operated a service station in Chinook, MT. The family moved to Whitefish, MT where Al worked in a machine shop. The family also lived in Aberdeen, WA where he worked for Lambs-Grays Harbor as a machinist, later to Wenatchee, WA for Alcoa Aluminum. The family moved to Moscow in 1968 when Al went to work for Washington State University in the mechanical engineering department.

In 1975, he purchased and operated Mundy’s Machine and Welding Shop along with his son, Dave. He retired in 1998 and wintered in Arizona for several years. He was a life member of the Moscow Elks Lodge, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling in their motorhome. He was also an active member St. John’s Lutheran Church in Genesee.

Surviving are his wife of over 61 years, Dayle, at their home, son Dave (wife, Irene and daughter, Emily) of Moscow, daughter, Peggy (husband Jeff Guske and daughters, Jessie Roberge and Heidi Score) of Twin Lakes, ID, and great grandchildren, Avery Roberge; Maddox, Zachary, and Brooklyn Score. He was preceded in death by a great grandson, Hayden Jeffrey Score and two brothers, LeRoy and Jim Mundy.

Viewing will be at Short’s Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, January 2nd from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. A private graveside service will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Genesee. A memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 3rd at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Genesee with Pastor Dana Helsing officiating.

A reception and luncheon will follow at the Genesee Senior Center.

The family suggests memorials be made to St. John Lutheran Church in Genesee.
