Wes was born July 3, 1929, at home in Helmer, ID, to Arthur Franklin and Edith Lawrence Henderson. He grew up and went to school at Helmer and graduated from Deary High School. Wes worked a short while in the woods before joining the Army in 1951. He was injured on a road-building detail at Hanford, WA, which ended his military service. He and Marilyn Zini were married at Grangeville, ID, in 1952.
Following Wes’ discharge as a corporal in November of 1952, they made their home in Deary. Wes worked for Potlatch Forest, Inc. as a heavy equipment operator running dozers and skidders for years until the northern units closed. He then worked for Lawson Logging, which later became Pine Creek Logging, with his son, Steve. Wes continued to work until his eye sight forced his retirement.
Wesley’s family was the heart of his life, and he enjoyed attending sporting events of his children and grandchildren and was a “fixture” in town on his 4 wheeler with his dog (and grand-dogs) riding along. Wes served with the Deary Fire Department and Ambulance crew for 50 years and was a councilman for the City. Wes was an active member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, serving as district deputy, and held all offices of the lodge, including Worshipful Master. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and Calam Shrine.
Wes is survived by his children, John (Nancy) Henderson, Karen Caffrey (Bear Staton) and Steve (Diana) Henderson, and his faithful 4-legged companion, Jasmine, all of Deary and his former wife, Marilyn Henderson, of Moscow. His legacy includes 10 grandchildren, Jeff (Emy) Henderson; Doug (Anna) Henderson; Stephanie Cochrane; Ashley (Josh) May; Shane (Nicky) Staton; Chelsey (Nick) Eisenhauer; Rachel Henderson; Ryan (Danielle) Staton; Chris Caffrey; Katrina Escapule; and 12 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Proctor; nephew, Darrel Herrmann; son-in-law, Dave Caffrey; and a special friend from his logging crew, Bill Freytag.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Nikki Stancik, his very special caregiver for the past few years and Kindred Hospice who also assisted with his care.
The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 5th at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Pastors Murray Stanton and Erica Waterman will officiate. The Masonic Tribute of Affection will be provided by Unity Lodge No. 32, A.F. & A.M.
