Wanda Jane Hocking (Janie) passed away peacefully August 25, 2016 after a hard fought battle with cancer. She refused to let her illness define her and remained active and involved with family and friends until her death.
Janie was born a twin on November 12, 1946 to Ray “Rosie” & Helen Day. She grew up in Deary and graduated from Deary High School in 1965. In 1966, she and Darrell Johnson were married and they had two children, Shannon and Christina. While their marriage later ended in divorce, they remained great friends.
In 1987, she married Glen (Tiny) Hocking, together they enjoyed many years spending summers in Mackay with family, fishing, hunting and camping until Tiny’s passing in 2005.
Janie was loved by all who knew her. She loved and embraced every moment of life and most would describe her as a “Go Getter” and one of the kindest, hardworking people you would ever meet. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren and great-grand children’s school and sports events. Her favorite time of the year was the Holidays and looked forward to hosting family gatherings. Most of all she loved spending time with her many family and friends.
She enjoyed helping others especially her bus kids throughout the years. She retired from Whitepine School District in 2011 after 34 years of service; 31 of those years as a bus driver. During that time she logged over 650,000 miles without a single accident. That same year, she was recognized as “School Bus Driver of the Year” by the State of Idaho.
After retirement, she and her companion Dee enjoyed the outdoors, 4-wheeling, camping with friends and traveling to Arizona. Lately her pride and joy was being GG to great grandson Gage.
Janie is survived by her companion Dee White -Deary, Two daughters Shannon (Scott) Malm – Deary, Christina (Nate) Metcalf- Lewiston, Grandchildren Kamas (Colby) Turcott, Paden Chase, Micailey & Madeline Metcalf, Great Grandson Gage, Step-daughters Luana Fredrick, JoAn Proctor & Tami Hewitt, Many step-grandchildren, great grandchildren and brothers Ray Day of Florida & Jim Day of Missouri as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many others that adopted her as their grandmother.
We would like to thank Dr. Gerardo Midence & all the caring staff at the St. Joseph Cancer Center and Kindred Hospice for the excellent support and care mom received. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center Foundation for the care of cancer patients or Kindred Hospice.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at the Pinecrest Cemetery in Deary. A time of fellowship and luncheon will be at the Deary Community Center following.
